Rooftop 'VisionKit' Installation and Configuration

Updated over 2 months ago

VisionKit Installation guide for machines

1. Overview

Plinx VisionKit is a ground breaking solution that brings visual intelligence to any machine type, transforming how operations are monitored and understood. Non-invasive yet highly informative, VisionKit provides live streaming capabilities where needed, while continuously delivering meaningful insights that help build a detailed picture of progress over time.

Designed with safety, sustainability, and productivity in mind, VisionKit acts as a set of 'eyes-on' for your operation. It offers real-time visual feedback during critical events, enabling rapid analysis and response. Crucially, it enhances situational awareness around machinery—helping to protect those working nearby and contributing to a safer, more efficient worksite.

2. Required Components

  • MachineSense Device (The Blue)
    (Mounted externally on the roof)

  • Grey Universal Power Adaptor (UPA)
(Mounted externally on the rear screen of the cab)

  • Wiring Loom
(4-core cable. Red and Black direct to battery. Green to Ignition live fuse or relay, white to ground point on machine body) - Cable is pre-fitted to UPA.

  • Cable Ties and Mounting Adhesive Pads
    (For securing cables)

  • Fuse Tap and Fuse Holder
(For connecting signal cable to fuse board and for adding inline fuse to positive cable)

3. Pre-Installation Checks

  • Ensure the machine is powered down.

  • Inspect and clean mounting surfaces.

  • Verify all parts are present and undamaged.

4. Component Placement

4.1 MachineSense VisionKit Device

Location: Centre or side of the roof (external)

  • Mounting Method: Magnetic, (Metal roof)

  • Alternative Mounting Method: Machine has a plastic roof click HERE for guide

  • Note: Ensure a clear line of sight to the sky (for GPS connectivity).

4.2 Universal Power Adaptor (UPA)

Location: External rear of cab, affixed to the rear windscreen

  • Mounting Method: Adhesive pad.

  • Ensure the UPA is secure and level

  • Apply 'PLINX Ready' Sticker

4.3 VisionKit - Driver Display

Location: Front windscreen

  • Mounting Method: Adhesive pad

  • Ensure the LED screen is visible to the operator.

  • Secure and tidy cables (Avoid looping where possible)

  • Affix Stop, Slow, Go, Idle sticker internally

  • Affix Operator Interface sticker internally

Connection

The driver display connects to the main unit in the one remaining port.

Driver Display must be within 1M of the VisionKit

5. Cable Routing and Connection

  • Universal Power Adaptor

The UPA is hardwired directly into the machines battery with a signal cable connection to an ignition 'live' point

  • Driver Display Configuration

The cable from the driver display is 1M long and must reach the VisionKit on the roof of the machine.  Adhere the Driver Display so it is visible by the operator and clear of any moving objects such as windscreen wipers.

5.1 MachineSense to UPA

  • Use the pre-fitted 2m power cable to connect the MachineSense unit to the UPA port.

  • Tighten waterproof nut, avoid sharp bends or pinch points.

  • Secure excess cable

5.3 Power Cable - UPA to Battery

  • Cable Route: From UPA to the machine’s battery compartment.

  • Connection - 24 Volts

    • Red to battery Positive (+) via inline fuse connector

    • Black to battery Negative Ground (–)

    • White to machine ground point

  • Secure all cables to avoid loose ends or contact with moving parts.

5.4 Signal Cable (Green) to Fuse Board

  • Route the signal cable to the fuse board. Use extension core where required.

  • Use a fuse tap or connect inline via a spare accessory fuse slot (e.g., ignition).

  • Confirm fuse rating matches system specs (typically 2A–5A).

Signal Cable connection MUST be to an Ignition Powered Fuse only. The signal is sent to the VisionKit MachineSense on the roof each time the machine is turned on and off.

6. Camera Configuration and Checking

Camera Orientation and Securing Instructions

  1. Set Orientation:
Position the camera so that the 'dot' on the camera body aligns with the horizon line, as illustrated.

  2. Default Lens Position:
Ensure the camera lens faces forward by default.

  3. Secure the Camera:

    • Primary Fastening: Tighten the clamp security bolt until the camera is firmly held in place and does not move.

    • Secondary Fastening: Tighten the M6 nut located at the rear of the security bolt to lock the camera's position.

7. Final Checks and Power-On

  • Double-check:

    • All cable connections are tight and insulated.

    • Mounts are secure and weather-sealed (for roof device).

    • UPA and MachineSense are within 2 metres of each other.

    • Driver display is fixed to the front screen and visible

    • VisionKit camera is correctly oriented and clamp is secure.

  • Turn on the machine and verify:

    • LEDs are lit on the Driver Display (Green)

8. Troubleshooting Tips
